Its' been a while since since you've heard from me. Theo and I have found a nice routine and life is pretty mellow. Mom relocated our temporary digs again so that we can have access to the pond during the day. We get to swim without adult supervision now! Whoooo -woo! We showed Mom how well we swim and what good choices we make. Plus, we bob around on the pond like, well, ducks on the water! Did she really think that we were going to drown?
Hello - we have webbed feet! Not that I'm dissing Mom - she's just looking out for our safety. We think it's cute, the way she fusses over us!

Mom wants me to add that this is a temporary situation! We are going to have a much better set up when the work on the backyard is completed! It's going to be beautiful, I'm sure!

Now that we spend so much time on the water, the pond gets pret-ty dirty, pret-ty quickly! We don't really mind it but everyone else seems to. Even our Boy. When a 15 year old boy comments on the quality of your pond water, you might want to take notice! But for Theo and me, it's great! We pretend that there's all kinds of scary monsters down there - snapping turtles, snakes, sharkes - that kind of thing. We pretend that we're deep sea hunters and we dive down to capture them and make the pond safe for all Duckkind! What? You don't think ducks have active imaginations? We imagine. We play. We even ponder.
Ducks aren't just one dimentional. Sometimes when we're bobbing on our pond, Theo and I like talk about life and stuff. It's kind of awesome to think how we came to be duck siblings - dublings, if you will.
Out of the twelve eggs our Mom tried to hatch, I was the
only one to make it. (Mom says I'm a scrapper!) I remember hearing someone quacking at me when I pipped, cheering me on, encouraging me to keep going. Then, when I had worked so hard and for so long without much progress, and was about ready to give up, someone began gently chipping the egg shell away for me, just enough for me to be able to push the lid off the egg. I was so relieved about that. More quacks of encouragement - and I was out! I was scraggly and wet and worn out.

Awww..
I took a nap after that. When I woke up I could see this thing (face) above me. Imagine my surprise - this 'face' was not what I had expected! I think we're hard-wired to kind of know what we look like, in a general way, at least. |
This very non duck-like face was HUGE... NO feathers of any kind, all skin - (and they say
ducklings are ugly when we first hatch!). A big knob in the middle (nose) and a mop of swirlly stuff on top (hair). But two features spoke to me: the eyes and the mouth (once I got over the fright of the white blocks (teeth) inside) both
smiled at me. Somehow, I knew that was a very good thing. I knew that this was my
MOM! I knew that we didn't have to look alike to be a family. I knew she was going to take care of me and give me a happy home.

Remember when we looked like this? |
Well, as you know, the other eggs in my clutch, didn't hatch. It looked like I was going to be an only duckling. Mom did her research, and realized that I needed a friend, a dubling, to grow up with. So, she found a place that sold 2 day old ducklings and a week after I hatched, she went to Wabash Feed Store and found Theo. She said she looked for the most active duckling in the box, she wanted a scrapper, like me!
She said Theo cheeped like crazy when she picked him up, but then, looked her right in the eye. She didn't even look at any other ducklings after that, she knew Theo was the one to join our family! She said he cheeped furiously all the way home and even managed to jump out of the box at one point!
I wouldn't have even done that when I was just 2 days old! (Remember how Theo was the first one to jump out of the pond by himself? Well, there you go!)
So here we are now, Theo and me, two ducks with a human family, one dog and two cats. Life's wonderfully weird! We have the best life. We like to think that we give something back to our family too. We entertain them a lot, make them laugh, love them back. I've said it before and I'll say it again: We are
two very lucky ducks!
